To a newbie Anime watcher such as myself, it seems the more fantastical, action-packed stories are more popular. I'm sure those are awesome, but my heart will always adore contemporary romances, which I haven't found many of, but of what I have found...they are the most heartbreakingly beautiful stories. For this week's Pause, I spotlight "Say I love You".
"Say I Love You" centers on Mei Tachibana, a young woman who has spurned building relationships with others after being ridiculed as a child. That is until, Yamato Kurasawa, barges into her life and shows her that she can have faith that there are people around her who want to enrich her life. That people are worth the risk of vulnerability.
This anime is not for the romantically challenged, so if you hate blatantly sweet romances you might want to steer clear of this one. But if you have a candy coated heart, you will adore Mei and Yamato’s journey into love. As much as I enjoyed the romance, I also really appreciated Mei’s own journey towards loving herself and the many new friends she makes as she opens up. What truly makes this worth the watch are the heartfelt journeys that all of the main and supporting characters take. Every character has a flaw or experience that's made them how they are, whether for good or for bad, and they're all such emotional journeys that I couldn't help loving every character in some ways. I especially appreciated the arcs of two characters, Megumi and Aiko, who seem quite the cold hearted mean girls at first. That's what I adore about contemporary Anime: there's a sweet top layer, covering infinite layers of emotional depth that's profound. And the score...it gets me every time!!!
This is a definite Valentine's watch!
Please note that Say I love You contains profanity and mentions of slightly mature content.
